What is it?

A BGA rework station is a tool that is specifically designed to make it easier to work with this unique type of electronic package.

Most electronic components these days are contained in a package type called surface mount.

Surface mount components have leads that are soldered directly to the top of the circuit board.

This is where they get their name, since the top of the board is the surface of the board they are called surface mount.

BGA vs Through Hole Components

This is in contrast to older electronic component packages that had leads that were inserted into holes in the circuit board and were soldered on the opposite side of the board.

These older types of electronic component packages are called through hole since the leads are inserted into holes in the circuit board and then soldered on the other side of the board that is opposite of the component itself.

BGA packages are a type of surface mount electronic component package since they do have leads that are soldered to the surface of the board, on the same side as the component itself.

Why is it Required?

The difference with BGA packages, and why they really require a BGA rework station to work with effectively, is that with a BGA package the leads are directly under the component itself.

Because the leads are under the component they cannot be soldered using a normal soldering gun.

Some people have been known to use a hot air gun instead of a BGA rework station to solder components in BGA packages, but the problem with this method is that the component’s lead connection solder joints cannot be inspected to check their quality.
